John Paul the Great

Nina and I found a hard copy of ‘Crossing the Threshold of Hope’ about a week or so ago at Books for Less in SM Mall of Asia. It was a bargain to get it at a little less then P 400 and before buying it, Nina wanted my assurance that I would be reading it. I bought a book, which I read when I’m away – Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay. i haven’t finished reading it. it’s been with me since 2005, i think… so now you know why my wife wanted a sense of assurance that we’re really investing in something I’ll actually use.

I said I would read it and yes, i’ve started reading it a few days ago.

It brings me back to the days of the World Youth Day 1995, when I too was at the threshold – graduating from highschool and entering college – and when John Paul the Great was here in Manila. His constant call to ‘be not afraid’ still echoes in my heart. And this is a constant message even in his book.

It has reminded me of how John Paul is really a great servant and teacher of the Faith. There is a sense of clarity in his words, yet you’ll be surprised at the level of depth at the topic he is discussing.

I’ve only managed to read through 2 chapters and am in the middle of half of the third. Already, he has talked about the Papacy – how it is a ‘contradiction’ to most just as Christ was when he was on earth – and of prayer – that it is the Spirit within us who yearns to pray and that man has been appointed to the priesthood of all creation in Christ.

Such profound insights which opens up your mind to the true meaning of the Christian Faith, the dignity of man, and the ever-presence of God.

His writing style begins with the exhortation of the Spirit, in Christ, and then aptly relates the words to men and men’s hearts.

I dare not interpret his words in the book, but here are some quotes that struck me when I was going over them:

“We begin to pray, believing that it is our own initiative that compels us to do so. Instead, we learn that it is always God’s initiative within us, just as Saint Paul has written*. This initiative restores in us our true humanity; it restores in us our unique dignity. Yes, we are brought into the higher dignity of the children of God who are the hope of all creation.” -p.17

“Prayer is always an opus gloriae (a work, a labor, of glory). Man is the priest of all creation. Christ conferred upon him this dignity and vocation. Creation completes its opus gloriae both by being what it is and by its duty to become what should be.” -p.18

“Creation was given and entrusted to humankind as a duty, representing not a source of suffering but the foundation of a creative existence in the world. A person who believes in the essential goodness of all creation is capable of discovering all the secrets of creation, in order to perfect continually the work assigned to him by God.” -pp.20-21

* “The Spirit too comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes with inexpressible groanings” -Romans 8:26

- Crossing the Threshold of Hope, Pope John Paul II, Edited by Vittorio Messori, Published by Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. 1994

>> I’m glad we bought this book. When Matt comes of age, I want him to discover this book. Hopefully, it will inspire him and guide him in life. We only hope his generation will also have great Teachers of the Faith. <<

My New Toy — Blue Radon W310

Here’s what I got as a Christmas present for myself….

It’s a Blue (brand, not the color) Notebook PC – here are the specs:

13.3″ WXGA Display 1280 x 800
Intel Core Duo T2400 1.83 GHz processor
1 GB DDR2 RAM
ATI X1300 256 MB Video Card with HyperMemory
60 GB SATA Harddisk
Built-n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
SD / MC / MMC Card reader
PCI-E Mini slot
DVD +/- RW

The Blue brand of laptops is fairly new. It’s a Filipino reseller’s brand and they package some pretty cool spec of notebooks. I was bent on purchasing a branded laptop, with all the research I did online and by rummaging through all techie mags I can find. But when I first saw this sleek gadget from a flyer at Greenbelt 1, I instantly said ‘this is the perfect laptop for me!’.

Who knew it will ever come true?

I asked my dad to accompany me when I purchase a laptop since he has a car and, after all,  a laptop is something you do take good care of because it’s a hefty investment. I’ve already asked permission from Nina to spend on this since it’s going to be a great help for two things: 1)  act as a back-up when the desktop konks out (which did happen – twice! – good thing it was still on warranty), and 2) helping me with my work when I’m sent out for Official Business. (By the way, this year’s Christmas Season was a blessed one, that’s why I was able to afford it too!).

When Papa and I got to the computer store, I looked around at the sample units they had running. I was firm on buying a 15.4″ screen, but when I saw how big it really was, it turned me off. I wouldn’t want to carry around that big and heavy thing, especially when I’m out of the country. I asked Bas, the salesman who accomodated us, to recommend one that’s relatively small and with a decent videocard (a true gamer like me need one!). He gladly pointed out to me the 13.3″ silver gizmo which, I now am a proud owner of.

I’ll save the review of this gadget for another posting.

Here’s what I’ve done with it so far…

  • brought it to Tagaytaty and watched Mr. Bean VCDs during New Year’s Eve (requested by Matt-Matt)
  • Tested it with a projector at the office, during a meeting
  • Installed Civilization IV, and now Rome: Total War – very happy at how it handles these graphics intensive games

Oh, and I didn’t have to shell out 100k… not even 80k… or 60k for this great gadget… It was the best money-for-spec around in its size range.

Talk about portability.

Ship! Ship! Please… Ship!

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

We managed to go to MV Doulos… and waited for an hour and a half to board the ship! Grabe pila! I guess it was a bad choice to go there on a Sunday… and on its 2nd-to-the-last-day in Manila. Matt’s disposition changed from good, to anxious about the harbor trucks and cars, to downright cranky. We managed to watch the sunset from the pier, and worried that it might rain. When Matt was cranky and wanted his mamam and pillow, we though he might fall asleep before we even get aboard (Oh, and we didn’t bring the stroller because Nina’s friend told her that the stairs were pretty steep). Nina and I alternated in enetertaining Matt and conditioning him that we’re about to get on board.

Our greatest fear was that when we reached the ship, Matt will be so cranky and even afraid that he wouldn’t want to go up… think of it…. almost 2 hours of waiting in line and then, nothing! But, these pictures will prove that our worst fear was to nought and that Matt had a great time onboard….

Matt was happy to take home a Thomas workbook about shapes. He liked the visit so much. Now, Matt remembers the ’ship’ and asks that we visit it again….’Ship! Ship! Please! Ship’…. We told him the ship has already left and he thinks Nina and I are joking.

Wait 6 more years Matt, maybe even less, then will visit her again and her books.

To the Book Ship and Some Dinosaurs

We’re going on a trip in a great big rocket ship….. little Einsteins!

Oooopppsss…. hehe, :)  been watching too many Playhouse Disney shows with young Matthew.

Anyway, we’ll be going off to visit the MV Doulous, currently docked at Pier 13 at Manila’s South Harbor (although not for long-it’s her last day in Manila, but she’ll be travelling to Cebu before she leaves the Philippines). Nina says it was six years ago when she last visited. It’s an experience I’m willing to take Matt to. We’ll be bringing our camera for some photos.

Oh, and Matt has a special request to visit the Dinosaurs along Baywalk/Roxas Boulevard. He saw them once when Nina brought him to visit the Philippine Star the other day and now, he somehow remebered it and remebered too to tell Dada to bring him there.

I know this blog’s a bit boring, but hopefully, when we get to upload the pics from the camera, I’ll be able to post some here.

A New Year, A New Blog

Hi!

I know it’s late in the new year to be starting a blog (I’m probably the gazillionth blogger who started 2007 with a new blog), but I guess it’s better than not starting at all…

I made a commitmment to myself to start a new blog this year. My previous blog was for my travels. it hasn’t been updated since March last year. Now, this blog is something different. It’s more about me:

  • who I am
  • what my intersts are
  • the things I want to express
  • how life is as a twenty-something husband and father
  • and, how things are here in the Philippines (socio-political ramblings of a Citizen)

Also, I’ve admired my wife, Nina, for coming up with her beautiful blog about her passions for scrapbooking and altered art. Now, it’s my turn to create something that I hope will parallel what she has come up with. (oh no, I’m aiming at a pretty high standard!)

But there is something more… I want to be an instrument of change.

C-H-A-N-G-E

Such a big word. It isn’t always comfortable, but a necessity. Often, these days call for the honing of skills in adapting to change rather than simply being more knowledgeable or being a specialist.

How? I’m still figuring that one out… could you help me?

Post comments. About anything of interest. Let’s talk about change and hopefully, one spark may trigger the embers, the embers into flames, flames into the wildfire that will usher in a new era of CHANGE!
